Brandon Jones, an assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at The University of Texas at Austin, has been elected an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) for the Class of 2019.
Associate Fellows are AIAA senior members recognized for accomplishing or leading “important engineering or scientific work, or who have done original work of outstanding merit, or who have otherwise made outstanding contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.”
Jones joined the Cockrell School of Engineering in spring of 2016. His research interests include space situational awareness and robust mission design, with topics that range from maintaining and characterizing orbital debris to advancing methods of spacecraft trajectory design that could prevent spacecraft from colliding with other space objects nearby.
In 2017 Jones was selected to receive the ASE/EM LUNAR Council Teaching Award, a student-selected award given annually to one ASE/EM faculty member who has made a positive impact on students’ educational experience through superior teaching.
Jones received his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado at Boulder where he worked as a research assistant professor before joining UT Austin. He has also worked as a contractor at the NASA Johnson Space Center and is a UT Austin alumnus with undergraduate degrees in mathematics and physics.
He will be honored and inducted as an Associate Fellow in January of 2019 at a ceremony held during the AIAA Science and Technology Forum and Exposition in San Diego, California.
